Program Overview:
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at UT Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is an intensive summer research training experience designed for college students who are preparing for Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. careers in biomedical research. Fellows spend 10 weeks (beginning in early June and ending mid-August) pursuing individual research projects in the laboratories of Graduate School faculty members.Fellows gain experience in modern research techniques and plan and execute an experimental strategy to answer a scientific question. SURF introduces students to the kinds of projects encountered during postgraduate research training and fosters an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of answers to current questions in the biological sciences. At the end of the SURF Program, fellows present their research during a poster session. Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in a physics, computer science, mathematics, biomedical engineering, or chemistry degree program at the undergraduate level and have completed their sophomore year. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or currently possess an F1 visa. Program Overview:
The University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center is pleased to offer a 10-week summer undergraduate research fellowship to support undergraduate students interested in basic cardiovascular research. The program starts the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Eligibility: All students currently enrolled in an undergraduate college or university, including graduating seniors, are eligible to apply. Additionally, applicants must be able to legally work in the United States and be able to complete a background screening and drug testing upon acceptance into the program. The University of Michigan conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Program Overview:
The SURE program is a ten-week summer program during which undergraduate research fellows conduct full-time independent research under the direction of a faculty mentor. Our summer researchers receive a housing award for residence on the Emory campus and a stipend to support their full-time attention to research training and professional development. Student researchers benefit from hands-on research, mentorship, networking opportunities, and graduate school preparation. SURE provides an opportunity for students to discuss research and start building their professional network with world-renowned researchers and the best and brightest peers from Emory and other institutions. SURE students come from all backgrounds and disciplines including the humanities, arts, social sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences and engineering. Eligibility: Both Emory and non-Emory students are eligible to apply for the Natural and Biomedical Sciences Program. SURE Robotics is a ten-week summer research program designed to attract qualified, underrepresented, and minority students into graduate school in the fields of engineering, computer science, or physics. Program Overview Students of at least rising junior level undergraduate standing are recruited on a nationwide basis and paired with both a faculty and a graduate student mentor to undertake research projects in robotics. Eligibility: We accept applications from undergraduate students who are majoring in engineering, computer science, or physics. All applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents attending higher education institutions in the U.S. (other than Georgia Tech) or Puerto Rico. Program Overview:
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center offers undergraduates the chance to explore clinical, translational, and basic science research in laboratories in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The primary goal is to provide students with a foundation for making career choices in the biomedical sciences. Students have the opportunity to work with one of more than 700 faculty members at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, many of whom have active research programs that cover all areas of pediatric medicine, including the study of developmental biology, congenital disorders, genetic diseases, cancer, cardiology, neurology and immunology. The program is nine or 10 weeks long, depending on the start date. Students work 40 hours per week and are paid a salary of $13 per hour. Students start the program on either May 25th or May 30th, depending on their availability and the approval of their mentor. In addition to hands-on laboratory experience, students participate in various academic and social activities with students from other summer programs at the University of Cincinnati. The SURF Program includes a mentoring workshop, two scientific writing classes, an ethics in research seminar, an introduction to surgery and a career day. At the end of the summer, students have an opportunity to present their research in a poster session, and a lecture is presented by a distinguished keynote speaker. Eligibility: Students who will be undergraduate freshman, sophomores, juniors or seniors in the Fall of 2023 (with a 3.0 or better GPA) are eligible to apply to the SURF Program. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and have an interest in a career in biomedical research or medicine. Criteria for selection include academic record, answers to essay questions and interest in obtaining research experience. Applicants are encouraged to specify their areas of research interest and / or specific mentors they wish to work with.
