Program Overview:
The Summer Training for Excellence in Education Research (STEER) program has been a successful staple of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Through participation in the program, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students and faculty, and GSE&IS faculty share in a research apprenticeship experience that has contributed to STEER students’ admittance to some of our nation’s finest graduate programs including the UC system. In the proposed effort, our aims are to continue to: Develop relationships between the UCs and HBCUs Prepare students for UC graduate application Prepare and mentor a cohort of tremendously talented students to conduct educational research in competitive UC programs and beyond. Eligibility: Eligible fellows will be upperclassman and recent undergraduates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Priority will be given to rising seniors; however, rising juniors and recent graduates may apply. Program Overview:
SURF fellows will typically spend eight hours a day, Monday - Friday, engaged in their faculty-led research projects. In addition to research training, the SURF program provides mentoring and workshops to prepare participants for success in pursuing careers and graduate school in earth and ocean sciences. Fellows also attend weekly research seminars, career panels, and give a formal presentation of their results at the SURF Research Symposium at the end of the program. The SURF program also includes local field trips and social events. Eligibility: Participation is limited to current undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students who will graduate before the start of summer 2023 are not eligible. Applicants of any race, ethnicity, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, dis/ability or veteran status are welcome. Students who are members of a group that is historically under-represented in earth and ocean sciences, including students who are Hispanic/LatinX, Black or African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American or Alaska Native, and LGBTQIA+ are strongly encouraged to apply. Students who are first-generation, nontraditional, economically disadvantaged, veterans, or parents and students with disabilities are also strongly encouraged to apply. No prior research experience nor formal coursework in earth or ocean sciences is required to apply. Program Overview:
The Summer Training Option in Rural Medicine is a University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Family Medicine sponsored elective rotation for medical students. It involves active clinical training as well as health promotion and disease prevention research in rural primary care settings in cities and towns across the state of Kansas. The summer of 2010 marked the eighteenth consecutive year that the program has operated out of the University of Kansas Medical Center, Department of Family Medicine. The program placed twenty-nine medical students at rural sites across the state of Kansas. Before students were dispersed to the rural clinics they spent a week of clinical orientation and research training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City and attended the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians (KAFP) annual meeting in Overland Park, KS. They spent the next six weeks working with primary care physician preceptors in clinical sites, where they also contributed to several research projects. The program concluded at the end of July, and the students returned to their second year medical school. Program Overview:
Students selected for summer research at UC San Francisco spend up to ten weeks working with UCSF faculty members on research projects. Participants in the program take part in seminars, lectures, and social events, creating a cohesive and supportive community. At the end of the program, students give presentations of their research and get valuable feedback from students, postdocs, and faculty at UCSF. The 2023 program will be held in person from Sunday, May 28 to Friday, August 4, 2023. If you are on the quarter system, you can have your exams proctored at UCSF or start on campus at the latest Monday, June 19, 2023. For late arriving students, your end date would be the same end date as the entire cohort moving out of the dorms on August 4, 2023. Eligibility: Be a currently-enrolled undergraduate student. Program Overview:
Paid summer research fellowships are available for undergraduate students who are rising juniors or seniors. Selected students will work on a project relevant to human health lead by a faculty member at either the University of Arkansas, or the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The scope of the projects range from laboratory based research to clinical studies using human subjects Eligibility: Students with an undergraduate science major (e.g., biology, chemistry) should apply for a fellowship in Biomedical Research. The Biomedical Research fellowships are designed for students with a solid background in science who wish to be part of an ongoing research project, develop their technical skills and are interested in pursuing a research career. Students with an undergraduate major in computer sciences, mathematics or a related discipline are encouraged to apply for a fellowship in Bioinformatics. The Bioinformatics fellowships are designed for students who are interested in learning more about how to apply their mathematics and/or computer skills to biomedical research problems and who are considering advanced training in the rapidly growing discipline of bioinformatics/computational biology. Penn State College of Medicine offers 10-week summer research programs for undergraduate college students interested in pursuing careers in biomedical sciences research. These programs are administered through our Office of Graduate Education. These programs provide student learning opportunities for career explorations in allied health and the biomedical sciences. Eligibility: The typical participant will be between their sophomore and junior year, or between their junior and senior year of undergraduate studies.
